Plastic Requirements for Product Safety Compliance
By Mike Campi, Senior Product Safety Engineer for Elliott Laboratories

The usage of plastics in the product manufacturing process has become so commonplace that it has essentially eliminated the usage of many other traditional manufacturing materials. Today, everything from your laptop to your coffee maker to your home stereo are made with extensive use of various types of durable and moderately inexpensive plastics. However, when manufacturers begin to plan for compliance with their applicable Product Safety requirements, there are a number of factors that need to be taken into consideration with regard to the usage of plastics.

There are three categories of plastic materials that are considered in the safety standards. The definition of these categories follows;

FCC Approves Usage of New HAC Standard

Manufacturers of digital wireless phones seeking certification of their devices for compliance with hearing aid compatibility (HAC) requirements can now use the measurement and rating procedures contained in the latest version of ANSI C63.19.

In a recently-issued Public Notice, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has authorized the use of ANSI C63.19-2006 American National Standard for Methods and Measurement of Compatibility between Wireless Communication Devices and Hearing Aids in applications for certification of equipment.

Manufacturers can also continue to use either the 2001 or 2005 versions of the standard for compatibility testing and for equipment rating. However, they may rely on only one version of the standard, and must identify in their application the version being used.

Readers can view the text of the Commission's announcement regarding HAC standards at this link.

    Free EMC Compliance Presentation and BBQ at Elliott Laboratories

    On Friday, September 29, Elliott Laboratories will be offering the last of our free BBQs and compliance presentations for the 2006 summer season. The topic: "Production/Service Friendly EMC Design" will be presented by David Bare, Chief Technical Officer, at Elliott's Sunnyvale facility. The presentation covers how EMC design issues can affect the manufacture and servicing of equipment that need to be EMC compliant. Enclosure design, component selection, assembly and testing are some of the areas to be discussed.

    This will be a great way to learn more about EMC design practice and principles. For more details or to RSVP for the free BBQ and compliance presentation click here.
