New EN 61000 Requirements Slated to Go Into
Effect
Manufacturers of who use EN 61000-6-4 for emission evaluations for
products to be sold the European Union should take note of some important changes that are slated to go into effect with regard to their EMC testing
requirements under EN 61000-6-4. The 2001 version of the standard will be withdrawn as of December 1, 2009. Any products that will be on the market
after this withdrawal date will need to be tested to demonstrate compliance with the new 2007 version of the standard.
Conformance to the European Union’s CE marking requirements
for industrial products that do not fall under a product specific standard for emissions evaluations involves compliance with the EN 61000-6-4
standard. (Common examples of products that do not have a product specific standard for emissions are semiconductor tools and industrial equipment for
process control.)
EN 61000-6-4:2007 introduces requirements for measuring conducted
emissions from telecommunications ports. Telecommunication ports include Local Area Network interfaces (Ethernet, 10/100 Base-T, 1000 Base-T) and Wide
Area Network interfaces (telephone, DSL, POTS, T1, E1, Synchronous serial and DS3)
