FCC orders changes to wireless microphones in the 700 MHz Band

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) released an order restricting wireless microphones operating in the 700 MHz band from being sold or distributed in the United States and their use must cease by June 12, 2010. These frequencies are now being used by public safety entities and by providers of wireless services for commercial use.

When these microphones were first designed, the frequencies they used were in between the frequencies that television stations used to broadcast television programs. With the completion of the digital television (DTV) transition on June 12, 2009, television stations no longer use the frequencies between 698 and 806 MHz (the 700 MHz Band) for broadcast.

Wireless and EMC Seminar Review

The Wireless & EMC Seminar by Elliott-NTS, Washington Labs and ATCB was held on December 7-11, 2009 at our Sunnyvale, CA location. The seminar featured a comprehensive overview of critical technical updates on regulations and policies from the FCC/TCB Council training, methods of testing, evaluation and certification of commercial equipment with a focus on EMC compliance and radio regulatory compliance in global markets.

The seminar provided an opportunity for attendees to get an insight on EMC regulations and evolving requirements for radio frequency systems and also get a better understanding of the processes and procedures for approving equipment.

We hope to have a number of seminars on our calendar this year and we want to do our best to address the specific topics and issues that matter most to you. Stay tuned to upcoming newsletters for details.  We look forward to your interest and participation.
Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS) and the 5 GHz Unlicensed Band

The advent of the 802.11a wireless market and the constant push to open up spectrum for unlicensed use created a requirement for Dynamic Frequency Selection (DFS), a mechanism to allow unlicensed devices to use the 5GHz frequency bands already allocated to radar systems without causing interference to those radars.
