Revision of EU's Toy Directive Expected
Forbes.com is reporting that the Commission of the European Union (EU) is expected to release its proposal for the planned revision of the EU's directive on the safety of toys (88/378/EEC), which may include a provision requiring mandatory compliance testing in certain cases.
"I would like to see the mandatory certification of certain types of toys," European Industry Commissioner Guenter Verheugen reportedly told members of the European Parliament during a recent debate on how best to strengthen consumer protection against unsafe toys. However, according to the report on Forbes.com Verheugen declined to be specific as to the kinds of toys that might be proposed for mandatory testing.
Verheugen's remarks came as the European Parliament urged the EU Commission to speed its release of a revised Toy Directive, including improved enforcement measures and effective sanctions for non-compliance.
