U.S. Releases Action Plan for Import Safety

In response to last summer's massive recalls of toys manufactured in China, a U.S. government interagency taskforce has issued a report containing recommendations for increasing the safety of consumer products imported into the United States.

Issued in November, the Action Plan for Import Safety was prepared by the Interagency Working Group for Import Safety, composed of representatives from almost all major cabinet departments and agencies, including the Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Commerce, the Department of Homeland Security and the Consumer Product Safety Commission.

The report presents what it calls a "strategic framework," based on prevention, intervention and response, and identifies 14 separate recommendations, some of which include verifying compliance of foreign producers with U.S. safety and security standards, harmonizing federal government procedures and requirements for processing import shipments, taking strong enforcement action to ensure accountability and creating an interactive import-safety information network.

FCC issues Citation against Absolute Toy Marketing, Inc

The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) issued an Official Citation against Absolute Toy Marketing, Inc. for marketing unauthorized radio frequency devices and for failure to respond to an Enforcement Bureau directive to provide information and documents.

After receiving a complaint, the Spectrum Enforcement Division ("Division") of the Enforcement Bureau began an investigation to determine whether HobbyTron.com was marketing unauthorized FM transmitters in the United States. On October 12, 2007, and again on October 18, 2007, Division personnel observed that the HobbyTron.com website advertised the sale of assembled FM broadcast transmitters, including models identified on the website as R-FM30B-WT, R-FM100B-WT, and UX-150, which did not appear to hold grants of equipment authorization from the Commission.
