New EN55022 Requirements Slated to Go Into Effect
By David Bare, CTO, Elliott Laboratories

Manufacturers of Information Technology Equipment (ITE) intended for sale in the European Union should take note of some important changes that are slated to go into effect with regard to their EMC testing requirements under EN55022. The 1994 version of the standard will be withdrawn as of August 1, 2007 and the 1998 version is scheduled to be withdrawn on October 1, 2009. Any products that will be on the market after those withdrawal dates will need to be tested to demonstrate compliance with the new 2006 version of the standard. This article describes these changes in some detail.

Conformance to the European Union's CE marking requirements for ITE products involves compliance with both EMC emissions and immunity standards. The emissions standards are regulated by EN55022 and the immunity standards by EN55024. (Common examples of ITE products are desktop and laptop computers, data storage devices, networking equipment, etc.) EN 55022:1998 introduced requirements for measuring conducted emissions from telecommunications ports. Telecommunication ports include Local Area Network interfaces (Ethernet, 10/100 Base-T, 1000 Base-T) and Wide Area Network interfaces (telephone, DSL, POTS, T1, E1, Synchronous serial and DS3).

The 1994 version of the EN55022 standard did not have requirements for conducted emissions on telecommunications ports, and with the 1994 version "Date of Withdrawal" approaching many products will require retesting or, at minimum, changes to their EU Declaration of Conformity in order to remain in compliance with the CE marking requirements. Any manufacturer who has applied the 1994 version of EN 55022 in determining the conformity of their product will have to change their EU Declaration of Conformity to reference a newer version of EN 55022, either the 1998 version or the 2006 version, by August 1, 2007.
